Motor City Staycation

Its 4:35 p.m. on a Friday afternoon. Your work week is coming to an end and the weekend is almost here. You look forward to racing to your car, starting the engine and going home to a nice long weekend of doing… nothing?

It’s easy to get stuck in the monotony of just relaxing on the weekend. There is so much to do in Detroit and two or three days of a staycation is just enough time to truly experience the motor city.

A simple definition of a staycation is a less expensive and local vacation. I’ll be the first to raise my hand for a cheaper vacation – especially if I get to truly experience my city!

Greektown

A great place to spend the weekend is Greektown Casino Hotel. I can’t even begin to describe all of the excitement within these four walls. Greektown Casino Hotel is a 4 star hotel located in a bustling part of the city. The Greektown area is engulfed in vivacious music, delicious restaurants and more entertainment than one person can handle in a few days. The hotel is in close proximity of St Andrew’s Hall and Music Hall if you want to experience a concert or musical. You can enjoy a drink from one of the many bars inside of the hotel or a fabulous dinner at Prism. You can also treat yourself to a relaxing spa treatment that would make anyone forget they have work on Monday. If you’re looking to venture outside of the casino, try the amazing cuisine of Greektown, like the Chicago-style pizza of Pizza Papalis; or maybe the tantalizing tastes of Fishbones. You can walk and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of this amazing area. Every weekend there are street artists ready to draw a portrait of you and a loved one. It’s an amazing experience that you won’t soon forget.

Roberts Riverwalk Hotel

River Walk

Another exciting hotel is the Roberts Riverwalk Hotel, which overlooks the breathtaking Detroit River. At the Robert’s Riverwalk you can stay, get pampered and enjoy your beautiful room starting at $119. The hotel is close to many Detroit sites like the riverfront, the Renaissance Center and Chene Park, where you may even be able to catch a concert! If you plan your staycation June 19-21, River Days is an exciting carnival experience that will have you visiting year after year. After a long day of exploring, enjoy the view at Andiamo Detroit Riverfront, an Italian restaurant located right on the riverfront.

Detroit Urban Adventures

Slow's

If you just want to enjoy an interesting excursion throughout the city without the hassle of getting a hotel room for your staycation, take a look at Detroit Urban Adventures. Starting at $25, you can take an entire city tour with a local Detroiter with expansive knowledge of the city. You will see everything from Corktown to the The Museum of African American History in Midtown. Besides being the oldest neighborhood in Detroit, Corktown has terrific restaurants and activities to keep you busy on your staycation. Relax with a draft cocktail at Sugar House or try everyone’s favorite barbeque place, Slow’s BBQ and indulge in their mouthwatering pulled pork sandwiches. If museums are more your vibe, the Museum of African American History is a great place to start. One of their most talked about exhibits, And Still We Rise: Our Journey Through African American History and Culture, is truly a sight to be seen. A 22,000 square foot exhibition takes you on a trip over oceans and continents to experience the highs and lows of African American culture.

Motown Historical Museum

An equally amazing gem to visit during your staycation is the Motown Historical Musuem. Motown is the birthplace of many amazing artists such as The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, the Jackson 5, and more! The Motown Mansion is a landmark on Grand Boulevard and was the original house of Berry Gordy, where he cultivated Motown and pop culture magic. An exciting new exhibit to see here is the Boulevard to Broadway. It takes you on the journey of Berry Gordy and his determination to change the face of pop culture. No matter what obstacle he came across, nothing stopped his ability to take raw talent and turn it into something spectacular. After you’ve experienced Motown, head over to Woodbridge Pub, where you can quench your thirst with an assortment of Michigan beer.
