2015 Detroit Improv Festival Brings Big Laughs to the D

If you’re a fan of world-class comedy, look no further than the Detroit Improv Festival, happening August 5–9. Now in its 5th year, DIF features performances from some of the best names in comedy, including SNL alums Horatio Sanz and (Metro Detroit native) Tim Meadows, and The 313 (former Detroiters now living in Los Angeles). The festival also includes shows from dozens of improv troupes from across the country, workshops, podcasts, parties and more.

Don’t know what to expect from an improv show? Don’t worry! Neither do the performers. Everything is unscripted, unplanned and unbelievably funny. And, it’s not just improv games like on “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” Shows at this year’s festival run the gamut from one-man shows to nine people crammed in a scene. You’ll see completely improvised musicals, plays, film parodies – even an improvised puppet show. No, really.

DIF performances will take place in Detroit at Grand Circus Park and the Marlene Boll Theatre at The Boll Family YMCA, and at several Ferndale theatres and restaurants. Tickets for DIF events range from FREE to $25 and are available at www.DetroitImprovFestival.org. Festival passes and group discounts are also available.

Want to try your hand at comedy? DIF also features workshops for anyone interested in learning the art of improvisation, or advanced improvisers looking to hone their skills. Workshops will cover a variety of topics and be taught by the very best in the industry. A special one-hour workshop for youth is also available for $15 on Saturday, August 8.

If you’re not exhausted yet, be sure to check out nightly afterparties, a special family-friendly daytime show, and a live recording of Horatio Sanz’s podcast The Hooray Show. Visit DetroitImprovFestival.org for information and tickets.
