- 1.Coffee and (___)
This post is part of our coffee series that explores the different experiences found in cafes throughout the city. In addition to sharing these great establishments, we hope to increase your knowledge and interest in the art of coffee.
A few months ago, the Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood gained a new resident, Coffee and (___), which is simply pronounced “Coffee and.” The brainchild of pastry chef Angela Foster, Coffee and (___) has been through many spaces and stages, but has finally found a home on Jefferson Avenue.
Foster, a native Michigander, had left the state to live her pastry chef dreams, but returned homesick for her family and friends. Upon her arrival, she joined Food Lab, a collective started by Detroiters to support each other and contribute to the city’s growing food movement. After growing her business with a series of pop-up locations (all met with great success), the pastry chef found herself a more permanent location in Jefferson Chalmers.
Coffee and (___) is a place of rest and comfort. Decked out in reclaimed wood, it’s different than most of the trendy coffee shops you see. The reclaimed wood creates a treehouse environment (designed by architectural design students from University of Detroit Mercy), complete with bright colors and flowers. Pieces from local artists line the walls, and the small hallway leads to the backyard patio complete with wood pallet seating and twinkle lights.
We’re sure you’re wondering what the (___) is for, but you can rest assured that it’s no accident. Foster’s love for pastries adds a unique touch to her coffee shop. Working as a pastry chef and making the same items repeatedly can be a drag, but Foster changes up the menu constantly! At Coffee and (___), you’ll find a new favorite treat every day, always based on what’s in season and readily available. Part of the excitement of walking into the shop is seeing what Foster has baked up that day.
The most popular drink at Coffee and (___) is the VCCP, a refreshingly sweet vanilla cold-pressed coffee ordered by countless customers. While the VCCP is a popular beverage, you should definitely consider ordering the Cold Press Latte. It’s a simple drink (cold-pressed coffee and milk), but it pairs perfectly with Foster’s pastries.
Coffee and (___) is located at 14409 E. Jefferson Avenue in Detroit. It is currently closed as new floors are being added and the kitchen is being remodeled. If you can’t wait for the reopen, place an order for one of Foster’s delicious pies! She’ll open her doors for pie pick-up the week of Thanksgiving.
