‘Come As You Are’ To Greenwich Time Pub - Opportunity Detroit

‘Come As You Are’ to Greenwich Time Pub

Tucked away on the corner of Cadillac Square is Greenwich Time Pub, a bar that has truly stood the test of time.

Surviving the economic downturn and witnessing the revitalization of the city of Detroit, Greenwich has remained the same in stature and service.

Owner Harry Hans emigrated from Albania in 1960 and immediately began working on his U.S. citizenship. After years of hard work, he purchased Borg’s Lounge in 1966.

“My dad’s older and hard of hearing but the stories that he has are amazing,” said daughter and Greenwich bartender, Nika Hans.

After purchasing Borg’s Lounge, Harry Hans met his wife, Dolorous, who had an affinity for England. They changed the name to Greenwich Time Pub, harkening to the maritime history of the Royal Navy and establishment of a worldwide time standard.

According to Nika, the bar was originally smaller in size until the mid 80s when the tenant next door moved out. Nika describes how her father bought the space next door and expanded the kitchen and dining area, adding an upstairs dining room for larger parties or special events.

“It’s an old classic Detroit bar,” said Nika. “A Mom and Pop bar.”

Greenwich is known for their Miller High life on tap, a service they’ve provided since the bar’s beginning in 1966.

“I refer to it as the ‘grandfather drink,” said Nika. We have sons and grandsons come in and drink it because their grandfathers and fathers drank it.”

Nika’s brother, Michael Hans, works alongside his father, grilling up good eats for the restaurant.

“He’s seen things come back,” Michael said.

The menu features everything from their famous tuna melt ($6), featured in a Core Detroit article, to their classic cheeseburger ($4.50), all with affordable pricing and classic diner taste.

Nika describes the charming qualities of the bar, where anyone can come in, eat good, affordable food, and be comfortable as they are.

“I would describe this bar as the corner bar of the city,” added Michael. “Everybody knows everybody. It’s not pretentions. It is what it is.”

“You can come in not knowing someone and leave with a bunch of new friends,” Nika added.

Visit the Hans family at Greenwich Time Pub, located at 130 Cadillac Square, and open Monday – Thursday from 11 a.m. – midnight and Friday – Saturday from 11 a.m. – 2 a.m.
