Detroit has always been known as “The Motor City Capital of the World,” but did you know the city has another famous title? In 2015, Detroit made history as the first and only American city recognized as a “UNESCO City of Design.”
Detroit celebrates this title during the Detroit Month of Design (formerly known as Detroit Design Festival), a month-long celebration from September 1 – 29 that features local designers, architects and artists through free programming and public events.
The event brings together Metro Detroiters and designers representing every aspect of art to acknowledge Detroit’s role in global design. What originally began as a weeklong celebration has now transformed into a month-long festival, in which established designers as well as budding artists feature their projects.
Presented by Design Core Detroit, the Detroit Month of Design aims to showcase concepts and designs from artists and household names like Ford Motor Company as well as furniture creator and newcomer Floyd. The celebration also includes designs from educational institutions like the Cranbrook Academy of Art.
Design Core Detroit has been involved in helping to make Detroit a national and global leader in design. Named by Metropolis Magazine as one of the “10 ‘Buzzing’ Design Cities of 2018,” Detroit is listed among international art giants like Toronto, Seoul and Amsterdam.
Since the 2015 designation by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Detroit has also joined an elite list of over 20 design cities who are using art and creativity as a means of sustainable and equitable development.
The 2018 Month of Design calendar is packed full of events for every art lover. Here are just a few you can’t miss!
