Mark your calendars because Sunday is “booked!” Come to Eastern Market on Sunday, July 15 for the 2nd Detroit Festival of Books. With over 150 vendors, dance from table to table to the groovy sound of live funk music, played by DJ Zig-Zag. The family-friendly and free event has a variety of vendors and food trucks to meet everyone’s needs. Vendors will be selling new and used books, comics, vinyl records, vintage board games, and other unusual items!
Ryan M. Place, the event chairman and creator, says “I want Bookfest to be a magical experience for everyone and a positive force in society. Books are powerful, they can change your life in very profound ways. Our goal is for everyone to have a great time.”
New this year, is the collaboration between Downey Brewing Company and Eastern Market Brewing Co. for an exclusive Bookfest beer, Et Tu Brute, a Brut IPA. The dry, champagne-like beer was named from a line in the Shakespeare play, Julius Caesar.
“Bookfest is the start of an interactive community book, which is writing itself. Every year is completely new and different, so catch it now,” says Place.
Come hungry! This year, food vendors include: Nosh Pit Vegan Food Truck, Matt’s Nu Deli Indian Food, Detroit Gourmet Nut Company, Big Dog Hot Dogs, Cosmic Burrito, and Cherry Pit BBQ. The food trucks will be located outside of the sheds.
Make sure to stop by Detroit Bikes in the Shed 6 parking lot. They will be selling their high-quality, steel bicycles made in Detroit.
There will be many vendors at the fest, and each will have their own terms of cash flow and change. Some vendors do accept credit card payments, but it is suggested to bring small bills. There is also a Flagstar ATM located in Shed 5. Bring your own reusable bag to help carry all your new books. This event is an all-weather event, so make sure to check the weather and dress accordingly.
The Detroit Book Festival runs from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 15 at Eastern Market’s Shed 5 and 6, located at 2934 Russell St. and admission is free! You can find parking spots scattered around the Sheds. After the fest, walk over to Eastern Market Brewing Co.
