Detroit Garment Guild Expands the Fashion Industry in Detroit

DG3LogoWith unique flair and creative inspiration everywhere you look, Detroit is a perfect environment for a fashion industry to thrive, and the Detroit Garment Group Guild (DG3) is trying to help. DG3 is a local nonprofit organization that provides education and opportunities for Michigan’s fashion community, as well as cut-and-sew manufacturing. This strong-willed group, with its experienced board of directors, is passionate about both the fashion industry and the city of Detroit.

DG3 carries out special events and provides opportunities unlike any other group in the city. FashionSpeak, Michigan’s only fashion conference, provides workshops and expert advice to those seeking success in the fashion industry. Presented annually in the fall, this conference is aimed toward keeping Michigan talent in the state, and it’s completely sold out since its start in 2013.

The Industrial Sewing Certificate Program is DG3’s direct response to a lack of skilled industrial sewers in the area. Students are trained to succeed in the cut-and-sew community, which includes apparel, upholstery and automotive industries. Expanding throughout the state and implementing career paths like pattern-making, furniture design and sewing machine repair, the Industrial Sewing Certificate Program is well on its way to building a stronger cut-and-sew community in Michigan.

The DG3 Makers Coalition is the Detroit chapter of affiliates dedicated to building a well-trained industry of cut-and-sew experts. Anyone can join the coalition, but it’s a great resource for fashion designers, students, suppliers and businesses.

DG3 is on the verge of bringing a highly-anticipated Detroit garment district to life. Next fall, DG3 will open a new multi-purpose facility equipped with tons of resources to help fledgling fashion businesses thrive. This fashion design incubator will feature educational and retail spaces, a manufacturing facility and knowledgeable mentors.

Although the fashion community exists in great numbers nationwide, DG3 President Karen Buscemi explains why the city of Detroit isn’t a large contributor: The tools and knowledge aren’t readily available to those who need them. This is exactly what her organization is trying to fix.

It’s no secret that the fashion business is a tough shell to crack, but Buscemi certainly knows her stuff. If you want to be successful in the fashion industry, she suggests learning all you can about the business side of fashion, networking every chance you get and using every resource available to you. She stresses that you can head to New York and be a little fish in a big pond, or you can grow your fashion business in the Motor City; where you can make a difference in a major way. In this city, it’s all about creating your opportunity.
