Douglas and Co., a Detroit based leather goods brand, is opening their first storefront in the city’s North End neighborhood on Thursday August 25 at 6 p.m. and you’re invited to come out and celebrate with them!
For the last two years, Melissa and Shane Douglas and their team at Douglas and Co. have been focused on producing quality leather goods in small batches. While they’re still making stylish and sophisticated leather products, they’re now bringing them to life with a storefront and production area customers can enjoy.
The new storefront, located at 609 E. Milwaukee, is attached to the company’s new production facility.
When asked how they want customers to feel when they come into the shop, co-founder, Melissa Douglas said, “We want people to have an experience that is magical to them. However they see our brand, we want them to see that here – plus a puppy.” (Customer’s can often find the couple’s dog, Levi, hanging out around the shop, which is great because he’s adorable.)
If magical is what the Douglas’s were after, they’ve certainly attained it.
When you walk up to the storefront, you’re greeted by their store sign on a gate covered in ivy and vines, leading to a garden in the front of the space. Café lights are strung across the area and leather seats are out front, almost like a porch. It definitely makes you want to stay a while.
When you walk in, you’re welcomed by products, mixed in with lush green plants. The walls are a clean, crisp white met with the stark contrast of the solid black, exposed ceiling.
Just beyond the storefront area is Douglas and Co.’s production facility. Tall shelves, full of leather, line the walls and work stations are spread out where you can see them cutting leather, sewing bags and making their signature candles.
While the brand has had success selling their products online and in select boutiques in Detroit and around the country, it has always been a goal of theirs to open a storefront.
“It brings the products to life and shows people how and where it’s made,” added Douglas.
Douglas and Co. is crafting a magical experience for their customers, but we wondered what was magical to them? What inspires them and their business?
Douglas said, “Beauty and life inspire us. More specifically, the lives we lead and what we leave behind.”
Detroiters themselves, Douglas told us about the importance of community in the couple’s personal lives, “Our neighbor is a 93 year-old woman who has raised her family on our street and they’re over everyday. We love living there and that to us is magical.”
You can see the importance of community and doing things with others in the way they conduct their business too. Douglas and Co. has done collaborations with other brands like Detroit Comb Company, making sheaths for their combs and eyewear company, Sharklion, creating cases for their glasses.
In the store, the company plans to hold workshops in the future. Teaching things like bracelet and keychain making.
Continuing to bring people together and their products to life, Douglas said they also plan to host bonfires in their garden area and other gatherings with drinks and snacks.
