Downtown Markets Have Local Detroit Businesses Booming

Summer in Detroit is even more exciting with the Downtown Markets. This activation has been open since May 25th and will be open through September. The markets feature over 30 shops located in three separate areas: Cadillac Square, Capitol Park and 1441 Woodward Collective. From adorable glass huts designed by Groundswell,  each of the vendors offer a variety of items from apparel and accessories, to home goods and food items from local entrepreneurs.

With over 50% of the vendors being minority-owned businesses, these shops showcase what is great about this city and even allows them to give back to it.  A great example of this is York Project, a clothing brand whose products are all printed and designed in Detroit. For every item sold they donate a kit that includes bottled water, socks and toilet paper to homeless individuals around the city. They partner with Alternatives for Girls, a Detroit shelter to help teach women to sew and produce their clothing for employment opportunities. Their end goal is to be able to produce every item they design in Detroit. York’s market is located at Cadillac Square and you can get more updates on all of their exciting projects by following them on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook!

For some vendors, having a set location has given them the ability to showcase their business and reach out to an audience they didn’t have the opportunity to before. Paisley Paper Co.  which is a homemade greeting card company that also features apparel, has personally seen this effect. I spoke with owner Andrea Williams to ask about how these downtown markets have helped increase her business and the awareness of her brand. “[It has helped] lots! Traffic in Capitol Park is a little slower than Cadillac Square or the Campus Martius area. However, we’ve had really good days. Above all, having a physical space to drive my local Facebook and Instagram followers to has been great. I love working the pop-up because I can really interact with the customers and they get to meet the folks who make the goods. And I think that’s really cool,” said Williams.  Paisley Paper Co. can be found in Capitol Park.
