A good sign that lots of sunshine and warm weather is headed to Detroit is Eastern Market’s Flower Day.
Every year, the event takes places the Sunday following Mother’s Day, which happens to fall on Sunday, May 20, this year. The 51st annual event will take place from 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at 2934 Russell Street.
From annuals and perennials to herbs, shrubs and trees, visitors bring wagons and wheelbarrows, plenty of trunk and backseat space in their cars and a healthy appetite for bringing nature’s bounty to their homes.
This is a huge event in Detroit that attracts many people so don’t let the idea of the lack of available parking scare you away from attending. There’s plenty of free parking at and around Eastern Market. Here are some places where you can park:
- Eastern Market Parking Garage on Riopelle Street
- Large lots at the north corners of the market on Wilkins Street
- South parking lot near Russell Street and the Fisher Freeway Service Drive
Keep an eye out for free and convenient parcel pickup areas so you can explore Eastern Market vendors and eateries while you’re there. When you’re ready to leave, simply pull up and load your vehicle with your already-purchased flats and pots.
Eastern Market Flower Day is made possible through a partnership with the Metropolitan Detroit Flower Growers Association (MDFGA). Every year, members arrive with at least 15 acres of different flowers. They are also ready to answer any questions that you may have and share best practices.
Don’t forget to add a little color in your home or office with the official 2018 poster, which is designed by Paul ‘Fifty’ Johnson. Copies of the poster are available for sale at the Saturday market for $10.
