Everything You Need to Know About Detroit’s 4th Annual Murals in the Market

If you’re into street art, live music, and mouth-watering food, visit Eastern Market September 13 – 22 for the fourth annual Murals in the Market (MITM). This 10-day art festival of painting and programming showcases over 120 murals created over the past three years by local and international artists on blighted buildings and alleyways in the area.

Named by Smithsonian Magazine as one of the top five mural festivals in the world, this event is sure to be an inspiration of creativity and fun. Plus, this year’s showcase is said to be the best yet, as more curated events have been added to the roster. In addition to the art, music and food you’ve come to enjoy, expect to experience live paintings from over 50 local and international muralists, artist talks, lectures, cultural tours, a bonfire, and a concert in the heart of the market.

Located at 2934 Russell St., this is an event the whole family can enjoy! What’s more inviting than a Family Reunion themed block party to encourage community engagement through public art? Scheduled on September 15, the block party is an all-day affair of live performances of local and national talent jamming funk, soul, and hip-hop genres, and special guest DJ Jazzy Jeff. Tickets to the Family Reunion Block Party are priced at $20.00 each (with 3.60 service fee) if purchased online.

New partnerships have given MITM the ability to continue their efforts to affect change in the Motor City. These efforts include teaming up with organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Michigan to raise awareness of civil rights work in the city; Green Living Science to introduce children to preparing and eating healthy and nutritious food; and Our Issue which combats sexual assault through public art, and many more.

As the summer ends, be sure to check out one of these amazing events. Whether it’s meeting the muralists or walking the tour, this 10-day street art festival continues to stand by its mission of inspiring and encouraging community engagement using public art as a vessel. With the creation of each mural, the Detroit’s historical Eastern Market has become a staple of visual significance. For the past six years, 1xRUN and Inner State along with many partnerships, impact the surrounding neighborhood, driving traffic and economic development to the area.

So, grab your free copy of the MITM Map at the Eastern Market Welcome Center which features over 100 murals that MITM has created since the festival’s inceptions in 2014, and suggested walking route. Experience the transformation as MITM continues to curate change – one brush stroke at a time!
