Lovers Only…what can I say about Lovers Only. Hmm, I have to be honest, I thought this was going to be a place that was, how shall I say…taboo? Luckily, it’s a new local burger spot off of Grand River in Capitol Park.! It’s finally warming up in the city, so I took a ride downtown and met up with Eli Boyer, proprietor of Lovers Only to get some insight into this new addition to the food scene.
When I walked in, the decor was serving up nostalgia with pastel pinks and teals, with wood, tile, and schoolhouse chairs. I immediately noticed the best spot in the dining area – the nook – which features vintage wallpaper, sage green paint, and a huge globe light. The aesthetic is the perfect amount of old fashioned and modern, with beverages served in classic glassware and bottles.
“We wanted to design a place that felt different than other burger joints, but was also playful and quirky enough to be a backdrop for fun food like burgers, onion rings and milkshakes,” said Boyer. “Lovers Only was born out of two desires…1) To create a hamburger that’s rooted here in Detroit, made with pasture-raised beef from local farmers, buns baked by local artisans and other quality goods from local producers. And 2) to create a more fulfilling dining experience within a fast-casual restaurant, one with the hospitality of full-service AND the convenience of quick-service,” he added.
I was excited to try their signature items: I had a Classic Smash, hand-cut fries, and an old school Vernor’s Ginger Ale! The burgers were served up fresh. Omg the burger was so awesome. Definitely made with love. You can’t ignore the fries, you have to have fries with the burger. Just enough salt and the right crisp. Just take me to heaven now. Alongside the burgers and fries, they also serve Calder Dairy milkshakes, as well as salads and other sandwich options.
“As an entrepreneur, my basic duty is to see a need and fill a need. There’s no doubt that many restaurants in Detroit serve burgers. But I didn’t see a local, independent operator going deep on burgers in Downtown Detroit and thought there was a real opportunity to make an impact with a product that features the best our region has to offer.”
Here are just a few items to try during your visit:
6oz Beef, Dijonnaise, Lettuce, Wisconsin Cheddar Sauce, Twiced Cooked Onions & Pickle Relish
Classic Smash $7.50
6oz Beef, American Cheese, Onion, Lettuce, Mayo, Mustard & Pickles
Hand -Cut Fries $3.50
Onion Rings $4
Fast Eddie $8
“Loose Meat”, Sharp Cheddar, Shredded Lettuce & Mayo Mix on a New England- Style Roll
Boyer wanted to create a positive space for guests, which was the genesis of the restaurant’s name. “People LOVE burgers, and we want to harness that love into an experience that lets our guests forget the outside world—all the stress, the hate, the to-do’s—and focus on LOVE when they’re with us.”
