Since its launch in 2011, Hatch Detroit has invested more than $2.4 million to support independent retail businesses in Detroit through funding, exposure, education and mentoring. In just five years, Hatch Detroit has formed an impressive network of alumni, including businesses such as Hugh, La Feria, Batch Brewing and Sister Pie. The Comerica Hatch Detroit Contest presented by Opportunity Detroit gives a chance for an up-and-coming retailer to win a $50,000 grand prize, ultimately giving them a larger platform to play an even bigger role in Detroit’s growing redevelopment. Opportunity Detroit is proud to congratulate this year’s winner: Social fitness and future contemporary cycle studio, Live Cycle Delight!
This year’s Hatch-off took place Friday, August 28th at none other than downtown Detroit’s entrepreneurial hub, the Madison Building. Owners Amina Daniels and Jackie Palmer were announced as the winners after delivering a final pitch to a panel of judges and tallying up votes from the public. In addition to the $50,000 grant, the honor also includes pro bono legal services, public relations assistance, architectural renderings, video promotion and accounting and IT services.
Live Cycle Delight has some big plans for their grant, including an in-house studio for fitness classes, community outreach, bike safety awareness and social cycling events throughout Detroit. Once it opens, it will be the first contemporary cycle studio in downtown Detroit.
“As Detroit grows, it’s important we acknowledge the increase in residents, restaurants, and local shopping in downtown Detroit,” the owners of Live Cycle Delight stated in their business plan. “With over 20 miles of bike lanes in downtown and midtown Detroit, and over 80 bicycles passing key blocks every hour, the need and inherent demand for an indoor cycling studio that supports local cyclists is evident.”
The companies that were selected as finalists will also be in good hands. The finalists, which included Eskimo Jacks Artisan Cookies & Ice Cream, Norma G’s Caribbean cuisine, and The Royce Detroit, have received valuable exposure and will be joining the successful Hatch alumni class. Hatch Detroit has helped more than eight businesses open in the city, not including the previous winners of the Hatch Detroit contest.
Hatch Detroit is committed to creating more jobs and amenities, which aligns with Opportunity Detroit’s mission to showcase Detroit’s exciting present and promising future by creating an urban environment that attracts businesses, residents and visitors.
“Live Cycle Delight is an exciting addition to the powerful and successful Hatch alumni network, which is now made up of more than 12 thriving retail businesses in Detroit,” said RJ Wolney, Director of Business Development at Rock Ventures. “All of the participants are great examples of innovative and collaborative entrepreneurs that will help ensure we are retaining and attracting top talent to Detroit. We are confident all of the new additions to the Hatch community will continue to be leaders in Detroit’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.”
Congratulations to Live Cycle Delight on being selected as the winner, and to all the businesses that participated in the Comerica Hatch Detroit contest!
