Summer is winding down already and it’s time for parents and students in the Motor City to gear up for the school year. Don’t miss the opportunity to take advantage of these upcoming back-to-school events in Detroit to help you prepare!
High School Enrollment Fair
Detroit Public Schools is hosting a recruitment fair today, Aug. 14, from 4-6 p.m. at the University of Michigan Center, 3663 Woodward Avenue. It is a great opportunity for parents and students to select an area high school for the fall if they haven’t done so yet. Seventeen high school programs will be on site to share information about their academic and college-track programs.
The fair also will feature career and trade schools in the areas of design, communications arts, technology, bilingual studies and other areas. There also will be educational professionals on hand to discuss career tracks with students and provide advice. Other presentations include: interscholastic athletics, scholarships and technical centers.
Annual Youth Connection
The 13th annual Youth Connection will be held Saturday, Aug. 16 from 12-4 p.m. at the Belle Isle Casino in Detroit. With more than 80 vendors attending, presenters will be discussing after-school programs, back-to-school resources, state college information and more.
Students in attendance will receive backpacks full of school supplies! Free food will also be provided for families.
Family Fun Day
Saturday, Aug. 16, marks the Seventh Annual Cody Rouge Family Fun Day and Back to School Rally from 12-4 p.m. at the Don Bosco Hall, 19321 W. Chicago Street. This event will provide parents with resources as well as a day of entertainment for the whole family!
Families can enjoy a free lunch, pony rides, face painting, a bounce house, art activities, and a DJ. Attendees will receive free backpacks and school supplies. There will be a tent with back to school resources and information, too.
Big Sean Appearances
The Big Sean Back-to-School Backpack Give-Away will be held on Thursday, Aug. 21, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. This 26-year-old hip-hop star will be returning to his hometown to visit Black Well Institute, 9330 Shoemaker Street, and Carleton Elementary School, 11724 Casino Street. Big Sean will be giving away 1,000 backpacks to Detroit students and signing autographs.
NAACP Hosts Picnic
The Detroit chapter of the NAACP, in conjunction with Detroit Public Schools, Black Family Development Inc. and the DTE Energy Foundation, will host the Back-to-School/Stay in School Picnic on Friday, Aug. 22, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Delores Bennett Park, 444 Smith Street.
Attendees will receive backpacks packed with school supplies and free lunch. Picnic activities include: a bounce house, an obstacle course, basketball games, sack races, face painting, music and more!
