Meridian Winter Blast Set to Deliver Great Times and Cool Events

Meridian Winter Blast presented by Quicken Loans, is back February 12 – 14, with all the skating, sliding and singing you’ve been waiting for! This annual festival is always a highly anticipated event for locals and visitors alike, drawing thousands of people every February to experience winter in the D.

We’ve got all the details so you can bring your friends and family to one of the city’s most beloved festivals.

Admission

Talmer Bank is teaming up with Matrix Human Services to donate to those in need this winter. Admission for this year’s event is three canned food items, or one children’s book or $2. Every donation helps as it is being shared with the Community Foundation of Greater Flint with a goal of raising $75,000 for those affected by the water crisis.

The signature 200-ft snow slide on Michigan Ave. is back! Tickets are $3 and you have to be at least 42” tall to ride. If you want to skip the line, Meridian is hosting a scavenger hunt to give away Snow Slide Fast Passes. Visit the Meridian Health Plan Booth inside the Monroe St. Comfort Zone for more details.

The Bedrock Zipline Adventure provides the ultimate rush of flying 34 feet in the air for the length of a football field! Bring a friend because two people can zip simultaneously at the corner of Woodward and State (Gratiot). Tickets are $10 each but you can buy two tickets for $15 before 3 p.m.

U.S. Park presents dog sledding exhibitions featuring Siberian huskies and sled dog racers Jill and Paul Miller and Bob and Melanie Packard. After each performance, interactive photos can be taken with the dogs for a $3 donation.

Roast marshmallows outside the Hard Rock Café! A kit with everything you need to make the sticky sweet treat is only $3.

There are free activities as well! St. John Providence is sponsoring free ice skating ($3 skate rental) for Winter Blast weekend. Great Expressions Dental Centers is hosting the hockey shot competition at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday to win prizes and dental treatments. Free snowshoeing is also available in Cadillac Square for adults and children.

Don’t forget to bring your camera! The Ice Garden, presented by DTE Energy Foundation, will feature lighted ice sculptures including annual favorite, the Spirit of Detroit. You can watch on-site carving demonstrations on Friday during festival hours. Something that’s sure to delight festivalgoers is ice-carved characters from the upcoming movie, Superman v Batman: Dawn of Justice.

Figure skating performances from the Detroit Skating Club, New Edge Figure Skating Club, Skate Company and Creative Edge Skating will be showcased each afternoon thanks to WH Canon.

Keep warm in between all that outdoor activity in four comfort zone locations:

  • Monroe St.: This tent features the Taste of Detroit where you can enjoy local cuisine while listening to local bands on the Michigan Lottery Stage.
  • The Atrium in 1 Campus Martius (formerly known as the Compuware Building): Check out kids programming with the Quicken Loans Kids Stage, the Winter Fun Lab featuring free activities from the Michigan Science Center, and Reading is a Blast, presented by the GM Foundation.
  • Cadillac Square: This Tim Hortons comfort zone features the Soaring Eagle Music Stage, Detroit Red Wings interactive fun and food for purchase.
  • Woodward Circle: Just south of the snow slide is an area featuring retail vendors and hot cocoa to warm you up.

The Taste of Detroit is back and located inside the Monroe St. tent, featuring cuisine from Red Crown, Hudson Café, El Asador, Andiamo Italia, Slow’s to Go, La Dolce Vita, (revolver), El Barzon, Detroit Seafood Market, Famous Dave’s, Golden Fleece and Mercurio’s.

Also inside the Monroe St. tent is the Michigan Lottery Stage, where bands performing pop, rock, blues, new wave, jazz, country and more will entertain music fans of all ages. Popular acts include Thornetta Davis, Last Call and SKYrise. Check out the full lineup.

Inside the Cadillac Square tent is the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort Stage featuring acts like Harlow, The Tom Toms and Yvette Meadows. View the stage schedule.

Kids will have a great time indoors too, as Reading is a Blast brings 12 local celebrity readers to the Quicken Loans Kids Stage to read beloved books aloud inside the atrium of 1 Campus Martius. Readers include Andrew Humphrey, WDIV meteorologist, Ray McCallum, head coach of the U of D Mercy men’s basketball team, and Rochelle Riley, columnist for the Detroit Free Press.

Other entertainment in the atrium will involve magic shows, comedy, puppet shows and jugglers. The Michigan Science Center will present, “Frostology,” a demonstration using liquid nitrogen and other cold substances to show how different materials react to extremely low temperatures. Other rotating activity stations include creating slime, powering a light bulb with fruits and vegetables and more.

Keep the Fun Going

New to this year’s festival is the “Hometown Tourist Giveaway,” featuring a chance to win more than 20 regional tourism packages from the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau. Prizes include overnight stays at top Detroit-area hotels, admission to museums and cultural attractions and dining gift certificates.

The official afterparty is Bar Blast, presented by Metro Times, on Saturday from 9:30 p.m. – 2:30 a.m. with continuous shuttle service between bars for just $10. You can pre-purchase wristbands at Neptix.com or any of the participating bars.

Why not make a weekend of it? The Westin Book Cadillac Hotel, located just two blocks from the event is offering a special rate of $159 for Winter Blast weekend, which includes overnight valet parking for one vehicle.
