Pop-Up Art Gallery, Evolve, Opens Thursday

Evolve1The Avenue of Fashion is always lively, but this Thursday brings a special experience. Evolve, a free, pop-up art gallery focusing on the evolution of artists and the city, opens this Thursday with wine, music and community at the Livernois Community Storefront from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and runs through Saturday, July 19.

Melissa Douglas and Caryn are the organizers/curators for the event. Their work will be displayed alongside pieces from fellow Detroit artists Brian Lacey from Library Street Collective and Jess Burton as well as music from DJ Lauren Vellucci.

Douglas has lived in southeast Michigan her whole life. She has been very active in Detroit’s volunteer community, where she developed a passion for the city and its people. That’s why she chose to study at Wayne State University in its urban studies program.

“I knew I wanted to work in Detroit. It didn’t make sense to go to school on the west side of the state,” says Douglas.

Douglas began doing art full-time in January, and she says this pop-up will focus on her evolution throughout this year.

Werner hails from Austin, TX, where she studied photojournalism and international development. Werner travels as a humanitarian photographer, but two years ago, she made Detroit her home base.

“I was looking for something new and had heard a lot about the art scene and new things going on in Detroit,” says Werner about her move to the city.

The pair met through Instagram. Douglas was looking for a wedding photographer and Werner was happy to help. The two have now been working together for over a year.

Apart from their respective work, Douglas and Werner are launching The People Project – their collaborative project featuring Detroit artists.

“As artists, we’re always behind the scenes, making the art. This project turns the artists into art themselves,” says Werner.

Douglas paints the artists and Werner photographs them. BecauseThe People Project is still in its early stages, the pair will be exhibiting their work in a show this fall.

To see their current work, as well as that of Jess Burton and Brian Lacy, be sure to make it out Thursday night for Evolve!
