I recently relocated to Detroit and am admittedly not as up on the foodie scene as I should be. One place I do know about is Slows! It’s a Detroit staple, and it’s coming to take over the food hut at Downtown Street Eats in Cadillac Square this week! I was so excited about it; I decided I needed to stop into their Midtown location (Slows To Go) to find the menu items slated for the food hut, and taste a few of them.
Slows opened it’s doors in 2005 at their Corktown location, right across from the Michigan Central Station. It helped bring life to an area of Michigan Ave., which many had written off. Slows is often pointed to as one of the first destination restaurants in Detroit and a big player in the revitalization of Detroit and it’s foodie community.
They were so popular, they’ve expanded to Midtown, Grand Rapids, and soon Pontiac!
Detroit isn’t the only city recognizing the deliciousness coming out of Slows. The restaurant was also on Man vs. Food and their sandwich, “The Yardbird” was featured on Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America.
Everything on the menu sounded great! I ordered “The Reason”, a sandwich made of tender pork, smoked slow and bathed in their NC Sauce then topped with Slows signature coleslaw and dill pickle strips. The tart NC sauce was complimented perfectly with the coleslaw and dill pickle.
As a break from the mountain of meat on the sandwich, I added on a side of macaroni and cheese. It was creamy and baked to perfection.
Needless to say, as Slows prepares to take over the food hut in Cadillac Square this week, I’m looking forward to spending my lunches eating some delicious barbecue. Make sure you stop by this week!
