The Ten Nail Bar celebrated its grand opening today, welcoming in a crowd of eager patrons ready for a perfect polish. Located at 1215 Griswold St. inside the Malcomson Building, The Ten offers affordable service with an up-scale salon experience, understanding that nail care is more than a luxury: It’s a necessity.
Owners Kelli Coleman and Anika Jackson are excited to be back in ‘the D’ and eager to contribute to the revitalization of the city: “We were really excited to move back and be a part of the redevelopment, not just sit on the sidelines,” said Coleman.
We’ve got an inside look of downtown Detroit’s first nailbar, along with an exclusive interview with Co-Founder Kelli Coleman and General Manager Blake Grannum.
It’s Friday morning and the store is buzzing with business. Detroit locals and suburban commuters mingle in the waiting area. The service-centered employees, referred to as ‘Dimes,’ serve cucumber infused water and champagne.
To Detroit born and raised Kelli Coleman and Anika Jackson, it’s a dream come to fruition.
According to Coleman, her and Jackson met in high school where they became close friends. Through their college years in Georgia, their bond remained strong; “And the rest is history,” chuckled Coleman. With a mutual understanding and passion for Detroit, the pair of friends united with high school friend Blake Grannum, now the General Manager of The Ten, with a business plan Coleman referred to as, “filling a huge void in the Detroit service industry.”
“Ultimately we noticed that there is this great migration of residents,” commented Coleman. “There are tons of entertainment options but not many services and we know that nail care is a luxury that is actually a necessity and how inconvenient it must be for women who live and work in the downtown area.”
The Ten offers an affordable standard manicure price of $20, referred to as the ‘Intention Manicure,’ and a pedicure price of $40, known as the ‘Intention Pedicure.’ A special offer is available when you book a combo, costing $55 for both services.
Kelli is also eager to announce their retail line of custom scents, partnering with local company Detroit Wick. The brand is called ‘The Ten Scent,’ with a home candle ($40), room spray ($20) and travel candle ($20) available for purchase.
To Coleman, the idea of ‘The Perfect Ten’ is more than a play-on phrase for the anatomy of the human hand (ten fingers, ten toes): It represents quality customer care and service.
“It really embodies all that we’re trying to accomplish in the brand experience,” she added. “We’re obsessed with our branding.”
Grannum, recalled her passion in customer service and management. A proud Detroiter, Grannum moved from her residence in Georgia back to Detroit to make a name in her hometown.
“I feel like Detroit is ready for so many things that we have all experienced around the world and it will only grow from here,” she said.
The Ten, according to Coleman, is “an elevated experience beyond the typical, routine nail care.” The dedicated Dime staff exudes comfort and hospitality, making every customer feel like one-of-the-girls.
Not shy on showing off their Detroit-pride, they commissioned a colorful art piece from local Detroit artist, Keiser Sudan that embodies the ambiance and theme of their salon.
Coleman is thrilled about all the support The Ten has received: “There’s no love like local love. We’re just so grateful for the reception and the excitement around us!”
