The birthplace of Techno comes alive Memorial Day Weekend. Taking place in Hart Plaza, Movement Electronic Music Festival is celebrating its 12th year running from May 26 – 28. The five stages (Movement Stage, Red Bull Music Academy Stage, Stargate Stage, Pyramid Stage, and the Resident Advisor Underground Stage) will feature new designs and features while sticking with its traditions.
Headlining the festival is Wu Tang Clan, celebrating their 25th anniversary of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). The group of nine diverse and innovative members broke out into the scene with 1990s New York lyrics. They also end the festival on the Movement stage starting at 10:30 p.m. on Monday.
Some festival favorites are Carl Craig, Inner City (Live) and Tiga. Laurent Garnier, French producer, DJ, and radio host, will close down the Red Bull Music Stage Sunday. On Monday, Charlotte de Witte will make her festival debut on the Underground Stage, and the Canadian DJ and record producer Rezz will play the Stargate stage.
This year’s Artist-in-Residence with a partnership with 1xRun, is Detroit-based muralist, Ouizi. Ouizi’s shrine-like installment explores the relationship between music and spirituality leaving the audience free to immerse themselves. Visit the installment near the Pyramid Stage.
Start your day with a Yoga session hosted by Detroit Yoga Lab at the Pyramid Stage. The class takes place Sunday and Monday from 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.. If you still have energy to keep dancing, there are official after parties throughout the city. Check out the schedule to find which ones you want to attend.
Refuel with mouthwatering offerings from local food trucks including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. Some highlights are Andiamo Pizza Pie Co., Bearclaw Coffee, and Slows BBQ.
The festival runs from 12:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. on Saturday and 1:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. on Sunday and Monday.
